Trash, recycling, and organics collection is provided to Ventura County Unincorporated Area (UA) residents by one of two providers. UA residents with questions about their service should contact their provider directly:

New Residential Services Effective January 1, 2024

Athens Services Agreement | Athens 2025 Rates                  EJ Harrison and Sons Agreement | EJH 2025 Rates

  • Reduced, bundled rates for most residents
  • Annual rate adjustments capped at 4%
  • New carts in uniform colors: black/grey for trash, blue for recycling, and green for organics (yard waste AND food waste)
  • Increased bulky item pickups: single-family customers will have (3) bulky item collections, and multifamily complexes will have up to four (4) designated collection events per calendar year
  • Door-to-door Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program
  • Neighborhood Cleanup event offering free drop off of trash, bulky items, yard waste e-waste collection and document shredding
  • Free compost and mulch
  • A need-based senior discount program using the California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) financial assistance program, easing the restrictions to qualify (show proof of age [62+] and CARE enrollment to your waste contractor in December to receive a senior discount on Jan/Feb billing)
  • Neighborhood Cleanup events offering free drop-off of trash, bulky items, yard waste, e-waste, and document shredding:

Curbside Recycling

What Goes in your Blue recycling container (from the Ventura County Residential Recycling Guide for Unincorporated Area Communities):

Cardboard: All cardboard including flattened shipping boxes
Cartons: All coated and non-coated paper cartons
Glass: Food and beverage containers
Metal: Aluminum and metal cans, metal lids, and aluminum foil
Paper: All clean paper, junk mail and magazines, paper boxes, cardboard egg cartons, and bags
Plastics #1-#7: Hard plastics such as milk jugs, juice, shampoo, detergent bottles, yogurt containers, nursery pots, and plastic toys. No plastic film or Styrofoam.

Organics Collection

What goes in your Green organics container:

Grass / Landscape Trimmings: All yard waste

No dirt, sand, rocks, palm fronds, yucca, or succulents

Wood: Untreated wood including pallets

Bagged Food Scraps: All food waste such as meat, bone, fish, shells, dairy, bread, fruit, vegetables, peels, pits, cobs and coffee grounds
